Carolina Dance Theater, Cary’s only professional dance company, presents Giselle at 7pm on Wednesday, October 28th at the Cary Arts Center. “We are thrilled to bring a professional classic ballet to the Cary stage,” says Executive Director April Schweitzer. “We’ve heightened the experience for the audience with interactive elements, film, contemporary dance in Act Two, and live music performed by talented violinist Matt Bell.”
Executive Director, April Schweitzer, describes Giselle as a performance to “update [the ballet] for an audience that may not be familiar with it — and give a fresh take for ballet audiences who have seen it performed before.” She tell us that in Act Two, Giselle “plays to our choreographers’ and dancers’ strengths in contemporary dance, giving the Wilis a chance to really move as the spirits that they are.” She describes that at the end of Act Two, Giselle features two live performances of original compositions by violinist Matt Bell. “We move away from the original ballet score, but stay in the same vein and mood with his music. I think the most unique piece of this show, and something that we are really becoming known for, is the incorporation of video, both to tell the story and as a character within the story.”
Carolina Dance Theater was founded in 2023 and is guided by Executive Director April Schweitzer, Artistic Director Willie Hinton, a renowned and sought after choreographer and Juliet Celeste Malit, founder of the Integrated Performing Arts Guild of the Philippines. In the summer of 2024, Carolina Dance Theater performed with Project Elimu in Kibera, Kenya — the first dance company from the United States to perform in the community. Carolina Dance Theater will be touring to Wilmington in November to perform at Dance-a-lorus, part of the popular Cucalorus Film Festival.
