When: Saturday, October 10, 2026 | 1:30-3:30p
Class Description: “Effort Lab” is a movement practice that investigates how effort shapes the way we dance. Through improvisational scores, partnered exercises, and physically rigorous movement, participants will experiment with changing the amount, timing, and quality of effort they bring to familiar actions.
Rather than searching for the “right” amount of exertion, we’ll practice moving across a wide spectrum—from restrained and economical to expansive and explosive—while paying attention to how effort influences momentum, coordination, perception, and choice. Dancers will repeatedly adjust, exaggerate, and refine their effort to discover new movement possibilities and more responsive ways of dancing.
Whether it is high or low effort, calibrating these effort levels is one way we survive capitalist systems while retaining agency and, ideally, cultivating enjoyment. Effort Lab uplifts effort as a compositional tool and design technique, thereby empowering each dancer to exercise their authorship, agency, and invention.
*Londs would like folks to know that there will be optional partner exercises and improvisation.
*Note: All Dance Assembly classes are intended for and taught to the advanced/professional level dancer
